Speak in Meaning Groups
Model the whole sentence, then practise meaning groups before rebuilding it. Ask learners to say a different request without adding a pause after every written word. Do not mark one chunking pattern as the only valid pattern.
Teach it in five minutes
- One minute: play the models without correction. Ask what difference learners notice.
- One minute: complete the three listening questions; elicit the evidence for each answer.
- One minute: reveal the written patterns and practise the target contrast or rhythm.
- Two minutes: use the shadow sentence, then exchange a new sentence with a partner. Let the listener report what they understood.
Model examples
- Could you / send me / the details?
- I would like / a quiet room / please.
- Let me check / the time / again.
Answer guidance
- The details: The speaker asks someone to send the details.
- I would like a quiet room, please.: The request is for a quiet room.
