The Four-Day Trial — konu illüstrasyonu

How would you judge whether this trial succeeded?

01 / Oku

A small design studio wanted to find out whether its team could work effectively over four days instead of five. The owner proposed a six-week trial. Staff would work fewer hours for the same pay, and the office would close on Fridays. Before starting, everyone agreed that the experiment should improve working life without simply pushing unfinished tasks into the weekend.

The team first examined how it used its time. Some meetings lasted an hour even when a short written update would have been enough. Employees often answered the same question in several different messages. They shortened meetings, kept project information in one place and agreed on periods when people could work without interruptions.

During the first two weeks, most staff enjoyed the extra day off. However, one designer began checking emails on Fridays because she worried about a demanding client. Another found that shorter deadlines made Thursday afternoons stressful. The team recorded these problems rather than presenting the trial as an immediate success.

At the halfway meeting, they changed the system. The owner explained the new schedule to clients and created a clear process for genuinely urgent requests. The team also stopped promising delivery dates before checking how much work was already planned. By the final week, Friday emails were less common, and staff said the workload felt more predictable.

The studio decided to continue for another three months before making a permanent choice. Its experience did not prove that every workplace should adopt the same schedule. A hospital, a shop and a design studio have different needs. For this team, the useful question was not simply whether four days were better than five. It was whether the work could be organised more carefully, with boundaries that were respected in practice.
