The Review That Changed

Before reading

What makes a review trustworthy?

01After waiting forty minutes for lunch, Jonas left a one-star review of a small restaurant. He wrote that the staff did not care about customers and advised everyone to avoid the place. He was hungry, annoyed and convinced that his experience told him everything he needed to know. He posted the review before the food arrived.

02A few minutes later, the manager came to his table. She apologised and explained that an equipment problem had delayed several orders. She did not ask Jonas to remove his review or suggest that the delay was acceptable. Instead, she told him how long the food would take and offered him the choice of waiting or cancelling his order.

03Jonas chose to wait. The meal was good, but he still felt that someone should have explained the problem earlier. On his way home, he read his review again. The forty-minute wait was a fact. The claim that the staff did not care was his interpretation. He had not known their reason for the delay when he wrote it.

04He edited the review. He kept the information about the wait and added the manager’s response. He also described the food and explained that communication had been poor at first. His new review was still critical, but it gave future customers a more complete picture of the visit.

05Jonas did not decide that negative reviews were unfair. They can help people choose and give businesses useful feedback. However, he realised that an accurate review needs more than a strong feeling. Describing what happened, separating facts from assumptions and including a later response can make criticism more useful. Changing his words did not mean pretending the problem had never happened.
